Fort McMurray — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says more than 50 infrastructure and community projects moved forward this summer as the 2025 construction season comes to a close.
The work ranged from neighbourhood upgrades to major regional projects such as the Northside Twin Arena, flood mitigation along the Clearwater River, and improvements to water and sewer services in rural communities.
“We appreciate the patience of residents as we complete this essential work during our short northern construction season,” said Elliot White, director of Project Delivery and Facilities Services. “These projects are investments in our future and strengthen infrastructure for the sustainability of our communities.”
Among the highlights, the Northside Twin Arena has finished most exterior work and is now moving into interior construction, with opening targeted for the 2026–27 hockey season. The Fort McKay Community Centre, a 12,000-square-foot facility, opened to the public in August after a June ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Flood mitigation continued across TaigaNova, Hardin Street and other reaches of the river system, while design work began for upcoming phases. Hardin Street has reached its target flood elevation, with additional paving and landscaping planned for 2026.
Rural utility connections advanced in Anzac, Conklin, Gregoire Lake Estates, Janvier and Saprae Creek Estates, where 90 new hookups were completed, bringing the total to 402 connected properties out of 835 eligible. Other improvements included upgrades at the Anzac Recreation Centre, a bridge replacement in Saprae Creek, and streetscape enhancements along Morrison Street and MacDonald Avenue.
While most work has now paused for winter, some minor activities will continue as weather allows, and major projects are expected to resume in spring 2026. Residents can learn more at rmwb.ca/construction or sign up for notices at rmwb.ca/subscribe.
