helley Powell, Suncor SVP Operational Improvement & Support Services, delivered the morning keynote at the Canadian Heavy Oil Association CONNECTS 2025
FORT McMURRAY — A senior Suncor executive delivered the keynote address at a Canadian Heavy Oil Association event, highlighting the industry’s push toward innovation and more responsible energy production.
Shelley Powell, a senior vice president at Suncor, spoke to CHOA members about the future of heavy oil and oil sands development. The organization, founded in 1986, represents roughly two thousand members across technical, operational and commercial roles in Canada’s heavy oil sector.
CHOA says its events are designed to connect professionals, share technical knowledge and strengthen collaboration in an industry working toward lower-emission production. The group is volunteer-driven and does not engage in lobbying, but focuses on education, networking and advancing sustainable technologies.
Powell’s address was part of CHOA’s ongoing effort to bring industry leaders, innovators and early-career professionals together. Organizers say members range from students and field specialists to executives, with many participating in CHOA to expand their networks and contribute to technical learning.
The association also partners with oilfield service companies, Indigenous businesses, technology vendors and research institutions as part of its annual sponsorship program.
CHOA says it intends to continue expanding its programming as the industry adapts to new expectations around sustainability and responsible resource development.
