FORT MCMURRAY — Fort McMurray International Airport is celebrating the launch of a new non-stop route to Vancouver as it prepares for one of its busiest holiday travel seasons.
Air Canada’s inaugural YMM-to-YVR flight departed Tuesday evening after a gate-side event that included greetings from airline and airport officials, cookies, coffee and a photo station. Mayor Sandy Bowman and representatives from Travel Alberta and Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Economic Development and Tourism joined the celebration.
Airport authority president and CEO Denean Robinson said the restoration of a direct Vancouver connection marks a major milestone for the region. “Restoring non-stop service to Vancouver has been a key priority for our team. It gives residents a smoother and more convenient travel option while opening access across British Columbia, North America and the Asia Pacific,” she said.
The new service operates Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with evening departures that align with Air Canada’s global network. The route allows travellers to make same-day connections to destinations including Victoria, Kelowna, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Manila, Tokyo, Sydney and Brisbane.
With the holiday season approaching, the airport says it is entering one of its peak travel periods. The terminal has been decorated for the season and YMM is reminding passengers to arrive at least two hours before departure, keep liquids under 100 millilitres, leave gifts unwrapped and check flight status before travelling.
A popular seasonal event returns Saturday with Photos with Santa in support of Santas Anonymous. The airport says the event is sold out, with families, children and pets set to visit Santa, meet Buddy the Elf and enjoy live music from local students.
Robinson said the holiday period brings “a certain magic” to the airport as the new Vancouver service begins. She encouraged residents to start their winter travel at YMM to help build demand for more flights. “When you choose to begin your journey at YMM, it supports our efforts to increase frequency on existing routes and secure new ones for everyone to enjoy,” she said.
