EDMONTON — Another three names have been added to the ever growing list of Alberta MLAs facing recall petitions as Elections Alberta confirms new applications have been approved under the Recall Act.
Alberta’s chief electoral officer Gordon McClure said petition applications targeting Calgary Shaw MLA Rebecca Schulz, Brooks Medicine Hat MLA Danielle Smith, and Strathcona Sherwood Park MLA Nate Glubish all met the legal requirements. Written notice of the approvals was sent on Dec. 2 to the applicants, the three MLAs, their party leader and Speaker Ric McIver.
The petitions were issued Tuesday and the required notices and applicant statements were posted on Elections Alberta’s website. MLAs have the right to file a response, although not all chose to do so. Any responses submitted are now available online.
Each petition must reach a signature threshold equal to 60 percent of the votes cast in the electoral division during the 2023 election. Schulz’s petition requires 15,000 signatures based on 25,000 votes cast. Smith’s requires 12,070 signatures from 20,117 votes. Glubish’s requires 15,770 signatures from 26,284 votes.
The signature period for the Schulz petition runs from Dec. 11, 2025 to March 10, 2026. Elections Alberta did not list the specific start dates for the Smith and Glubish petitions in its release but confirmed all petitions follow a 90 day collection window.
Before canvassing can begin, applicants must register canvassers who meet eligibility rules, including being electors who have lived in the riding for at least three months. Only registered canvassers may gather signatures.
Voters signing a petition must be eligible electors residing in the riding for at least three months before signing. They must print their name and address clearly, sign only once during the 90 day period and provide an original physical signature. Digital or online signatures are not valid. Each signature must be witnessed by a registered canvasser, who must later swear an affidavit confirming eligibility.
All signature sheets and affidavits must be submitted by March 10, 2026. Elections Alberta will verify the petition within 21 days, report the results within seven days of verification and publish the outcome online.
Elections Alberta is responsible for reviewing canvasser applications, registering canvassers and issuing identification that must be shown during canvassing. Applicants must oversee canvassers, provide training and ensure rules are followed throughout the process.
