FORT McMURRAY — Warm weather and limited early snowfall have delayed the opening of the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road, prompting the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo to offer temporary support for residents who rely on the route. Crews continue to build the road surface from both ends but the municipality says it is too early to estimate an opening date.
Work underway includes clearing, grading and watering along the north and south sections of the seasonal road. The municipality is urging residents not to travel on the closed route, warning that damage to the snow base or ramps could extend delays.
To help residents receive supplies ahead of the holidays, the RMWB will offer free personal shipping to Fort Chipewyan through McMurray Aviation starting Dec. 15. Each community member is eligible for one free shipment of up to 250 pounds. The offer will continue until the road opens to light vehicles or until further notice. Commercial and industrial shipping rates still apply.
Heavy vehicles such as fuel trucks and semitrailers will continue to require permits to use the road once it opens. The municipality is asking operators to apply early to avoid delays. Safety tips, permit information and winter road guidelines are available online.
