Exciting tax form.
OTTAWA — Canadians who file their income taxes on paper will no longer automatically receive a mailed tax package from the Canada Revenue Agency for the 2025 tax year, as the agency continues its shift toward digital services.
The CRA says it has made important changes to the 2025 income tax package, ending the long standing practice of mailing paper forms to people who filed paper returns the previous year.
In a notice posted last week, the agency said electronic filing allows returns to be processed more quickly and gives taxpayers easier access to self serve options. About 93 per cent of income tax and benefit returns were filed online last year.
Canadians who still choose to file on paper will need to download and print forms themselves or contact the CRA to request a paper package. The agency says the standard package sent upon request will no longer include several supplemental schedules that are used less frequently.
Removed forms include those related to capital gains and losses, the multigenerational home renovation tax credit, education amounts and some provincial schedules. The CRA said it reviewed usage data to minimize the impact on paper filers.
The agency noted that forms for the 2025 tax year will not be available until Jan. 20, 2026. Requests made before that date will result in taxpayers receiving the previous year’s forms.
The CRA also continues to promote its SimpleFile service, which allows some lower income Canadians with non taxable returns to have their taxes completed and filed by the agency at no cost.
