FORT McMURRAY — Traffic restrictions are in effect on a section of Highway 63 north of Mildred Lake after crews discovered a cavity beneath the roadway, prompting inspections and repairs expected to last up to a week.
Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors said the cavity was found just south of the Fort McKay intersection. As a result, drivers can expect reduced speeds and lane restrictions while crews assess the extent of the issue and complete repairs.
The speed limit through the affected area has been reduced to 50 kilometres per hour. Traffic is restricted to one lane in each direction during off-peak hours, and overweight vehicles are prohibited from using that section of the highway until repairs are finished.
The province said repair work will include filling the cavity beneath the roadway and ensuring the integrity of the highway surface. The work is expected to take five to seven days, depending on conditions and the results of ongoing inspections.
Highway 63 is a major transportation corridor connecting Fort McMurray with surrounding communities and industrial operations in the oilsands region. Drivers are being urged to use caution, obey posted speed limits and allow extra travel time while the restrictions are in place.
