FORT MCMURRAY — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is receiving nearly $500,000 in federal grant funding to support new housing placements and additional staffing aimed at reducing chronic homelessness in the region.
The municipality has been selected to receive $497,000 through the Homelessness Reduction Innovation Fund, administered by the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness. The funding will support 30 new local housing placements, along with the hiring of two housing coordinators and a landlord support liaison.
Municipal officials say the added resources will help improve access to housing for people experiencing chronic homelessness through collaborative case conferencing and closer coordination with service providers and landlords.
The project is scheduled to run from Nov. 1, 2025, to Aug. 31, 2026.
The funding is part of a broader national initiative in which the Government of Canada and the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness are investing $45 million over three years to support data driven community projects focused on preventing and reducing homelessness.
Fort McMurray is one of 16 communities selected in the first round of the program. The municipality said the funding builds on its ongoing homelessness response efforts, which focus on housing stability, coordinated supports and partnerships across the region.
More information on local homelessness initiatives is available through the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
