It appears Canadians including shoppers right here in Wood Buffalo are spending more this holiday season.
Early data from digital payments company Visa Canada shows holiday retail spending rose 4.4 per cent year-over-year, pointing to stronger consumer activity compared to last year.
The increase includes all forms of payment, from credit and debit cards to cash and cheques, suggesting many households are still making room in their budgets for holiday shopping.
Despite the convenience of online retailers, the report shows in-store shopping remains the preferred choice, accounting for 88 per cent of total holiday spending. Just 12 per cent of purchases were made online, a trend that aligns with busy local malls, small businesses, and last-minute gift shopping across Fort McMurray and the surrounding region.
The data provides an early snapshot of holiday spending habits and suggests many local shoppers are prioritizing in-person experiences, whether it’s browsing shelves, supporting local businesses, or picking up last-minute gifts ahead of the holidays.
