EDMONTON — Alberta’s first babies of 2026 arrived minutes after the clock struck midnight in Edmonton and Calgary, according to Alberta Health Services.
Alberta Health Services said two baby boys were born at 12:03 a.m. on New Year’s Day, one at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital and the other at the South Health Campus.
At the Grey Nuns in Edmonton, a baby boy was born to parents Stephanie Fernandez and Elrick Obligar, weighing six pounds, four ounces. In Calgary, baby Theodore was born to Sara and Sebastian Stewart, weighing eight pounds, six ounces.
Health officials extended congratulations to families welcoming new additions on the first day of the year, marking the arrival of Alberta’s newest residents.
Unlike previous years, Alberta no longer releases birth information tied to specific hospitals across the province. As a result, the identity of Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo’s New Year baby will remain unknown.
The births come as the province continues to reorganize oversight of hospital services under Acute Care Alberta, which is responsible for coordinating and governing acute care services across Alberta in partnership with hospitals and urgent care centres.
