FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — The load limit on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road is increasing to 15,000 kilograms as of noon Friday, allowing heavier vehicles to begin using the route.
Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says vehicles exceeding the limit must remain off the winter road until further increases are announced, warning heavier loads could damage the ice surface and create safety hazards or delays.
The municipality says all commercial loads require a permit to use the winter road, including fuel trucks and semi-trailers. Officials note all changes to load limits will be formally announced and drivers are expected to follow posted signage and detours.
Drivers are reminded to stay to the right, stop at river crossings where only one vehicle is permitted at a time, and watch for crews and equipment. The municipality also cautioned against speeding, particularly through the delta section, where fast-moving vehicles can create pressure waves under the ice that may lead to sudden breakage.
Updates are available through the municipal website, social media channels and the winter road hotline at 866 743 6111.
