FORT MCMURRAY–Unseasonably warm weather is causing some big changes for winter roads in the region this week. If you’re planning to travel, expect weight restrictions and even temporary closures as crews work to protect the roads from damage during these fluctuating temperatures.
Here’s what you need to know:
Fort Chipewyan Winter Road
Tuesday, Jan. 13
• From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., only light vehicles under 5,000 kg are allowed.
• After 10 p.m., the limit goes back up to 15,000 kg.
Wednesday, Jan. 14
• The road will be closed from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• After 10 p.m., the 15,000 kg limit returns.
Thursday, Jan. 15
• Another daytime restriction from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for vehicles under 5,000 kg.
After Thursday, colder weather should allow the road to reopen fully to the usual 15,000 kg limit.
La Loche Winter Trail
Tuesday, Jan. 13
• Starting at 10 a.m., weight is restricted to vehicles under 5,000 kg until further notice.
Wednesday, Jan. 14
• Closed from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 15
• The 5,000 kg restriction stays in place until further notice.
Officials say weight limits will increase as soon as it’s safe, and all changes will be announced. Vehicles heavier than posted limits can face serious fines and penalties.
Safety is key on winter roads. Here are some important reminders:
• Follow all signage and drive to conditions—roads will be rougher for the next few days.
• Don’t speed. Most sections are 50 km/h, but river crossings drop to 15 km/h. Speeding can create dangerous waves under the ice, breaking it and damaging the road.
• Stay on the right-hand side, especially on hills.
• Heavy vehicles like fuel trucks and semis need a permit—apply early to avoid delays.
• Check the Heavy Vehicle Information Package and review Winter Road Safety Tips before you travel.
Bottom line: plan ahead, slow down, and stay safe.
