Fort Chipewyan RCMP have charged a 40-year-old man from Fort Chipewyan following an early morning incident involving an off-highway vehicle.
Police say that around 2:48 a.m. on January 11, 2026, officers on patrol along McDermot Avenue observed an off-highway vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. Before police could activate emergency equipment to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle fled the area.
A short time later, officers located both the vehicle and the driver within the community. RCMP say a firearm was found in close proximity to the driver at the time of arrest, and a replica firearm was also found on the individual.
The 40-year-old man is facing several charges, including flight from police, operating while prohibited, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm contrary to a court order, mischief under $5,000, and failure to comply with conditions of release.
The accused was held for a judicial interim hearing and remains in custody. He is scheduled to appear next in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort Chipewyan on January 19, 2026.
