A worker has died following an incident at Suncor’s Fort Hills site near Fort McMurray, according to Alberta’s Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration department.
Officials say the worker was operating heavy equipment on January 13 when it sank into muskeg, a soft, bog‑like terrain common in the region. RCMP and Suncor emergency crews responded, but the worker has not yet been located, and search and recovery efforts continue.
Suncor says early signs suggest the incident may have been linked to a medical event, though the investigation is ongoing. The worker was a contractor.
This is not the first fatality at the Fort Hills site, where previous deadly incidents occurred over the last ten years.
Provincial officials say no further details will be released until Occupational Health and Safety completes its review. Suncor expressed condolences to the worker’s family, friends and colleagues.
