FORT MCMURRAY — Three members of Fort McMurray’s roller derby community are heading to the international stage after being named to Team Canada’s men’s roller derby program for 2026.
Athletes Ryan Wheeler, known in competition as Doug Drillmore, and Taylor Scott, who skates as Sidedish, have been selected to the Men’s Roller Derby Association World Cup training squad. Kim Wheeler, known as Rotten Brotten, has also been named an assistant coach with the national program.
Team Canada Roller Derby announced the roster this week following what organizers described as a highly competitive tryout process involving skaters from across the country.
In a statement, the organization said those selected demonstrated the skill, commitment and teamwork required to represent Canada at the Men’s Roller Derby World Cup, while also acknowledging the depth of talent shown by all athletes who participated in tryouts.
Men’s roller derby has been growing steadily worldwide, with national programs expanding in Europe, Australia, South America and North America. The full-contact sport combines speed, strategy and athleticism, and is governed internationally by the Men’s Roller Derby Association.
Canada has been a consistent contender on the world stage, and selection to the training squad marks the first step toward earning a final roster spot for the 2026 World Cup.
Local roller derby supporters say the Fort McMurray selections reflect years of dedication to the sport and the strength of the region’s derby community.
The training squad will take part in camps, competitions and evaluations over the coming months as coaches work toward final team selection. Team Canada Roller Derby said further details on training schedules and the 2026 Men’s Roller Derby World Cup will be announced at a later date.
