FORT McMURRAY — With just over two weeks to go, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is finalizing plans for WinterPLAY 2026, its annual winter festival, which runs Feb. 20 to 24 and features a mix of free activities and competitive events at the Snye.
One of the marquee attractions, Shootout on the Snye, a four-on-four pond hockey tournament, will return this year, with registration extended to Feb. 8. The entry fee is $50 plus GST and fees per person. Teams of six players are guaranteed three games, with round-robin play on Feb. 20 and 21 followed by playoffs on Feb. 22. Age divisions range from under-7 through under-18, along with competitive and non-competitive adult categories.
Tournament organizers are also seeking referees, who will be paid $25 per 35-minute game. Games begin at 6 p.m. on Feb. 20 and conclude at 5 p.m. on Feb. 22.
The municipality is offering several fundraising opportunities for community groups raising money for local non-profits. Eligible groups can apply to provide event support or assist with pancake breakfasts, earning $700 per four-hour shift for teams of seven. Duties may include site cleanup, monitoring bonfires, supervising ice features, assisting with wagon rides and fireworks, and welcoming visitors. Applications close Feb. 9.
Local businesses and social profit organizations are also being invited to operate food sales out of the WinterCHALET heated tent. Up to three organizations per day will be selected to run snack, barbecue or café stations. Applications are due by Feb. 9, with successful vendors to be notified by Feb. 12.
As preparations continue, access to the Snye has been closed until Feb. 28. Residents seeking river access are being directed to the Tom Weber and Raphael Cree boat launches.
WinterPLAY will again offer a slate of free activities, including ice sculptures, horse-drawn wagon rides, cultural programming, maple syrup treats from the Sugar Shack and fireworks. More details are expected to be released in the coming days.
