FORT MCMURRAY — Alberta RCMP are urging business owners to review security measures as police continue to respond to break and enters across the province, including ongoing incidents affecting commercial areas such as downtown Fort McMurray.
RCMP say there were 3,858 business break and enters across Alberta RCMP jurisdictions in 2025, down from 4,574 the year before. Police say the decline is encouraging, but thefts and property damage remain a concern for businesses.
Downtown Fort McMurray has seen a number of business break-ins over the past several years, adding to concerns among local business owners about theft and property damage.
RCMP recommend business owners use alarm systems and ensure they are armed after hours, install quality security cameras covering entrances and key areas, and maintain adequate interior lighting along with exterior motion lights.
Police also advise keeping track of keys and access fobs, keeping windows clear of posters or signage that block visibility, and securing valuables away from windows overnight. Additional measures such as shutters, bars or fencing may provide added protection.
RCMP say investing in security measures such as strong locks, alarms and cameras can reduce the risk of theft and help identify suspects.
Business security brochures are available at RCMP detachments across Alberta. Police encourage anyone who sees suspicious activity to report it. Crimes in progress should be reported by calling 911. Anonymous tips can be provided through Crime Stoppers.
