FORT McMURRAY — Southbound traffic on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road will be closed for several hours early Feb. 23 to accommodate a wide load carrying modular homes north.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo said two modular homes are scheduled to travel north on the winter road beginning just after midnight Monday.
Southbound travel from Fort Chipewyan to Fort McMurray will be unavailable from 12:01 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Feb. 23. Northbound drivers are also being advised to expect delays during that time.
Municipal officials said a third wide load is expected to use the winter road in the coming weeks, with details to be announced once confirmed.
The Fort Chipewyan Winter Road is currently operating at its maximum weight limit of 45,000 kilograms. The La Loche Winter Trail is also at its maximum load limit of 27,500 kilograms.
Drivers are reminded to stay to the right side of the road, especially on hills, and heavy vehicles such as fuel trucks and semi trailers must obtain a permit before using the winter road.
Updated information, safety tips and permit details are available through the municipality’s winter road webpage and hotline.
