Premier Danielle Smith announces referendum on immigration limits and provincial rightsDMONTON — Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says the province will hold a referendum in October on proposed measures aimed at limiting immigration and expanding provincial powers under the Constitution.
In a televised address Thursday, Smith said Albertans will be asked to vote on nine questions on Oct. 19. The proposals include giving Alberta more control over immigration, setting eligibility limits for provincially funded health, education and social programs, and introducing residency requirements before some newcomers can access provincial supports.
Other questions would ask voters whether Alberta should work with other provinces to pursue constitutional changes, including reforms related to federal programs, the Senate and provincial authority in areas of shared jurisdiction.
Smith said the questions reflect feedback gathered by the Alberta Next Panel during consultations held last year. She argued current immigration levels are placing pressure on provincial services and finances.
The referendum announcement comes one week before the provincial budget, which the government has said will include a multibillion dollar deficit. The Opposition NDP is expected to respond Friday.
