FORT McMURRAY — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is preparing to begin seasonal flood mitigation work along Clearwater Drive as part of planning for the 2026 river break season.
The municipality says temporary flood protection measures will be installed to support permanent infrastructure already in place. Construction is scheduled from March 2 to May 31 and will include temporary closures affecting roads, parking areas and some trails.
Clearwater Drive is expected to close between Franklin Avenue and King Street beginning March 15 for the installation of surface protection measures. The municipality says the road is expected to reopen to two way traffic by April 10.
Intermittent construction is also planned along Clearwater Drive between Franklin Avenue and Borealis Park, with temporary trail closures anticipated during the work.
Officials are advising residents to plan for possible traffic delays and allow extra travel time in nearby areas.
The project is being managed by the municipality’s project management office, with work carried out by Sureway Construction.
The municipality says the work is aimed at improving flood safety during seasonal river conditions.
Residents are asked to follow construction signage, keep a safe distance from equipment and avoid closed areas. More information is available through the municipality’s Pulse call line or at rmwb.ca.
