EDMONTON — March 1 marks the official start of wildfire season in Alberta, as the province reminds residents to take precautions heading into the spring and summer months.
Todd Loewen, Minister of Forestry and Parks, took to social media to say wildfire season is a reminder for people to stay prepared and aware, noting about 60 per cent of wildfires in Alberta are caused by human activity.
“Small actions make a big difference,” Loewen said, urging Albertans to check local conditions, follow fire bans and restrictions, ensure winter burns are fully extinguished, and fully soak and stir campfires before leaving.
The minister said crews have already responded to 26 wildfires this year. Budget 2026 maintains funding for firefighters, equipment, aircraft and technology used for wildfire response.
Loewen also said Alberta is expanding its hoist equipped helicopter program and increasing its night vision fleet to support 24 hour operations.
The province says it is continuing prevention efforts through FireSmart and community fireguard projects aimed at reducing risk and improving community resilience as the 2026 wildfire season begins.
