FORT McMURRAY — RCMP say a driver accused of operating a heavy truck erratically on Highway 63, the main link between Fort McMurray and Edmonton, has been arrested and faces multiple charges.
Police say the incident began around 4 p.m. on Feb. 24 when Redwater RCMP received reports of a box truck travelling southbound near the hamlet of Abee in Thorhild County.
According to RCMP, the truck, weighing more than 14,000 kilograms, was weaving into oncoming traffic and at one point stopped in a driving lane.
Alberta RCMP Traffic Services located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop.
Mounties say the investigating officer observed signs of impaired driving during the interaction. Police say the driver attempted to start the truck and put it into motion before being stopped and arrested.
Further investigation revealed the driver was wanted on eight outstanding warrants issued in Edmonton, RCMP said.
Joel Pierre Doctor, 41, of the Northwest Territories, faces several charges including obstruction of a police officer and failing to comply with a release order.
Police say he also received immediate roadside sanctions for refusing to provide breath samples and was cited for open liquor in a vehicle.
Doctor was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear March 12 in the Alberta Court of Justice in Edmonton.
Redwater RCMP assisted Alberta RCMP Traffic Services in the investigation. Police also worked with the Edmonton Police Service to execute the outstanding warrants.
RCMP thanked members of the public who reported the dangerous driving, saying tips from motorists helped officers respond quickly to the situation.
