EDMONTON — An Alberta technology company and an Indigenous-led cooperative say they are forming a partnership aimed at developing carbon-credit projects tied to the province’s oil and gas sector.
Theaus Global Inc. and NorthernNations Cooperative Group announced the strategic alliance Monday, saying the collaboration is intended to expand access to global carbon markets while supporting Indigenous participation in energy-related projects.
The companies say the partnership will focus on developing several types of carbon-credit pathways linked to Alberta’s energy industry.
Those include projects tied to solid-form bitumen, which aim to reduce emissions associated with transporting oil products, as well as initiatives that would generate credits by keeping carbon-intensive oil stored in underground geological formations for long periods.
The alliance also plans to pursue methane-abatement projects aimed at reducing emissions from mature or inactive wells.
Under the arrangement, Theaus Global will lead the development of carbon-credit technologies and methodologies, while NorthernNations Cooperative Group will focus on stakeholder engagement and supporting Indigenous participation in the projects.
The organizations say the initiatives are intended to create economic opportunities while supporting efforts to reduce emissions tied to Alberta’s oil and gas operations.
The companies say the collaboration aligns with policy goals outlined in the Canada–Alberta Energy Collaboration memorandum of understanding and Alberta’s mature asset strategy, both of which encourage innovation, responsible resource development and Indigenous participation in energy projects.
Projects developed under the alliance will still be subject to Alberta and Canadian laws, and the companies said the announcement does not represent government approval or recognition of the proposed carbon-credit pathways under existing regulatory programs.
