FORT McMURRAY — A Fort McMurray man is facing impaired driving and criminal negligence charges after an off-highway vehicle collision left a pedestrian seriously injured on a winter trail near Gregoire Lake Provincial Park.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say officers and Regional Emergency Services responded at about 8:32 p.m. on March 11 to a trail southeast of Fort McMurray, about six kilometres north of the park entrance.
Police say witnesses reported an off-highway vehicle had become stuck and then backed over a pedestrian.
The victim suffered severe injuries and was taken by ambulance to a hospital in the Edmonton area.
RCMP say a 46-year-old Fort McMurray man was arrested at the scene without incident.
He is charged with impaired operation causing bodily harm, impaired operation while over 80 milligrams per cent and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
Police say the accused cannot be named until an information is sworn.
He was released from custody on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on April 15.
The investigation is continuing with assistance from Wood Buffalo Municipal Traffic Services.
RCMP are reminding people not to operate off-highway vehicles or other recreational vehicles while impaired.
