FORT McMURRAY — Wood Buffalo RCMP are urging drivers to slow down and remain alert in construction zones as enforcement increases on highways near Fort McMurray.
Police say speeding and distracted driving in construction areas can endanger workers and other motorists and can lead to significant penalties.
Construction zones are marked by roadway signage, flashing amber lights or both.
Fines for speeding in construction zones where workers are present are doubled and can range from $211 to $1,200. Drivers caught travelling 50 kilometres per hour or more over the speed limit must appear in court, where fines and possible licence suspensions are determined.
Demerit penalties for speeding offences in construction zones range from two to six points.
Wood Buffalo Municipal Traffic Services increased patrols in a construction zone on Highway 63 south of Fort McMurray between Feb. 14 and March 11 and issued 195 speeding violation notices.
RCMP say additional construction zones are expected as warmer weather approaches and are reminding motorists to obey posted signage, allow extra travel time and remain cautious when driving through work areas.
Police are also advising drivers to avoid passing other vehicles in construction zones and to be prepared for sudden stops or changes in road conditions.
