FORT McMURRAY — A new literacy initiative aimed at promoting reading and community connection is set to launch later this month in the Wood Buffalo region.
Community leaders, educators, students and residents are expected to gather at Keyano College on March 27 for the launch of Read Across Wood Buffalo Day, an initiative focused on reading, storytelling and civic engagement.
The event will run from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Elements Room at Keyano College’s Clearwater Campus and will include cultural performances and remarks from local leaders, including Deputy Mayor Mike Allen.
The initiative is being led by Juleus Ghunta, the Writers’ Guild of Alberta’s 2025 Regional Writer-in-Residence for Fort McMurray, with support from the Writers’ Guild of Alberta, Arts Council Wood Buffalo and the Northern Canada Collective Society of Writers.
Ghunta says the March event marks the beginning of broader efforts to build awareness, with organizers planning outreach to schools, non-profits and businesses in the months ahead.
The first official Read Across Wood Buffalo Day celebration is scheduled for Sept. 25 during Alberta Culture Days.
The launch event will feature a poetry reading, live music and an opportunity for attendees to meet local writers and take part in community activities.
Organizers say the initiative is inspired by similar programs worldwide that encourage literacy and strengthen community ties through storytelling and shared experiences.
