EDMONTON — Alberta’s government says it will introduce legislation to set a 120-day approval timeline for major projects, aiming to speed up development and attract investment.
Premier Danielle Smith says delays in approvals affect jobs and economic opportunities, and a fixed timeline would improve certainty for industry while making Alberta more competitive globally.
The province says the proposed changes would improve coordination between government and regulators, while maintaining requirements for Indigenous consultation and environmental protections.
Energy and Minerals Minister Brian Jean says the move is needed to respond to growing global demand for reliable energy and to ensure projects proceed more quickly once assessments are complete.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to expand oil and gas production and increase market access, including goals to double production by 2035.
The government says the plan builds on recent agreements with Ottawa aimed at reducing regulatory duplication and streamlining approvals within provincial jurisdiction.
