CALGARY — A 23-year-old Calgary man is facing 21 charges, including child luring, extortion and multiple child sexual exploitation offences, following an investigation into alleged online targeting of young girls.
The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams’ Internet Child Exploitation unit arrested Malik Buccini-Small on March 17 after what police describe as an extensive investigation involving the Calgary Police Service, Red Deer RCMP and Morinville RCMP.
Police allege the accused used social media platforms to contact and lure young girls, then made demands or threats to obtain sexual images and content.
Investigators say three victims have been identified so far, ranging in age from seven to 15, in Red Deer and Morinville. In one instance, police say a victim felt sufficiently threatened to call 911.
Officers say there is preliminary digital evidence suggesting additional victims may exist and are urging anyone affected to come forward.
Buccini-Small is charged with child luring, invitation to sexual touching, extortion, uttering threats, obtaining sexual services for consideration and multiple offences involving child sexual abuse material, including making, distributing, possessing and accessing such material.
Police say the accused is believed to have used the usernames “iggypup” and “wakanda4ever,” as well as the aliases “MJ” and “007.”
Authorities also say Buccini-Small was involved in coaching youth sports and was serving as an assistant coach with a girls hockey team in Calgary at the time of his arrest.
He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on March 24.
Investigators say their priority is supporting victims and identifying any others who may have been targeted.
