FORT McMURRAY — The Wood Buffalo Regional Science Fair is underway, bringing students from across the region together to showcase their projects at Shell Place.
Students are presenting a wide range of experiments and research, with judges evaluating entries based on scientific method, creativity and overall effort. Organizers say the event gives participants a chance to move beyond classroom learning and apply scientific thinking through hands-on investigation and independent study.
Projects span multiple disciplines, with interdisciplinary approaches encouraged as students explore real-world questions and solutions.
The fair features six age divisions, ranging from elementary grades 4, 5 and 6 through to junior, intermediate and senior high school levels.
Each year, more than 50 students are recognized with awards, including medals, plaques and certificates, along with more than $10,000 in total cash prizes. In each division, one gold medal, two silver medals and three bronze medals are awarded, with gold winners receiving $500, silver $250 and bronze $100.
Additional special awards highlight projects in specific fields such as environmental science, innovation, coding and robotics, with recipients receiving certificates and cash prizes.
Organizers say the competition is designed to foster curiosity and inspire students to take a more active role in understanding the world around them.
The fair will be open to the public Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, offering residents a chance to view the projects and meet the young researchers behind them.
Top finalists selected from the junior, intermediate and senior divisions will go on to represent the region at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, scheduled for May 23 to 30 at the Edmonton Expo Centre in Edmonton.
