EDMONTON — Alberta’s government is committing a record level of funding to the arts through Budget 2026, with more than $40 million aimed at supporting artists, organizations and the province’s growing creative economy.
The funding includes more than $38 million for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, marking the third consecutive year of record investment in the sector. Officials say the funding is intended to expand access to arts programming and strengthen connections between artists and communities across Alberta.
Arts, Culture and Status of Women Minister Tanya Fir said the investment is meant to support creativity and community development while ensuring arts opportunities remain accessible across the province.
The province says the arts sector is a significant contributor to Alberta’s economy, generating more than $1.3 billion annually and supporting more than 18,000 jobs.
Budget 2026 includes a $3.5-million increase to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, aimed at expanding its capacity to deliver programming and support artists and organizations.
Cynthia Moore, chair of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, said the funding represents the highest level of support in the province’s history and described it as an economic investment, citing research showing arts funding generates additional economic activity.
Organizations receiving support say the funding helps provide accessible programming and maintain community spaces for arts education and performance.
The Alberta Foundation for the Arts distributes grants to both organizations and individual artists and manages a large provincial art collection, while also supporting travelling exhibitions across the province.
The government says the investment is part of broader efforts in Budget 2026 to support economic diversification alongside spending in education and health care.
