FORT McMURRAY — A weekend event in Fort McMurray is aiming to expand access to track and field for para athletes while offering training opportunities for local coaches.
Holy Trinity Catholic High School is set to host two para athletics days April 18 and 19, welcoming athletes of all ages and abilities to try events including running, wheelchair racing, throwing and jumping.
Organizers say the event will place a special focus on para athletics and unified sport, while remaining open to all participants.
Coaching sessions will also be offered throughout the weekend, with opportunities to earn National Coaching Certification Program professional development points. Sessions will be led by University of Alberta para athletics head coach Maegan Ciesielski.
The event will include both instructional sessions for coaches and hands-on “try-it” opportunities for athletes.
Organizers say the goal is to introduce participants to events and equipment they may not otherwise have access to, while building awareness and skills in inclusive sport.
The sessions will take place at Holy Trinity Catholic High School. Registration is available online.
