EDMONTON — Alberta RCMP are urging residents to prepare emergency plans as the province heads into wildfire and flood season.
Police say families should be ready to act quickly in the event of a natural disaster, particularly during the summer months when risks tend to increase.
The RCMP recommends households consider the needs of all members, including seniors, children, pets and those with medical or mobility challenges, when developing a plan.
Officials say families should identify evacuation routes, establish meeting points and ensure all members have access to contact information in case they are separated.
Residents are also encouraged to prepare an emergency kit with essentials such as food, water, medications, important documents and basic supplies to remain self-sufficient for at least three days.
The RCMP says people should be familiar with emergency plans at their workplaces, schools and within their communities, and should follow directions from first responders during an evacuation.
Police also advise having an out-of-town contact who can provide support if evacuation is required.
Authorities say practising emergency plans regularly can help ensure people are prepared to respond quickly if an alert or evacuation order is issued.
