OTTAWA — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has appointed a British Columbia member of Parliament to lead a new caucus focused on expanding Canada’s economic and strategic ties in the Asia-Pacific region.
In a letter released Thursday, Poilievre named Chak Au, MP for Richmond Centre—Marpole, as chair of the Conservative Pacific Gateway Economic Engagement Caucus.
The role includes developing a strategic plan for the region, identifying opportunities to expand trade and strengthen Canada’s position in Indo-Pacific markets, and producing a report by the end of the year.
The Conservatives say the initiative is aimed at improving access to key markets and addressing infrastructure gaps they argue are limiting Canada’s ability to export resources and compete internationally.
The party also says the caucus will examine ways to strengthen national security interests while supporting economic engagement in the region.
Au has previously been involved in trade, cultural and humanitarian missions across several Asia-Pacific countries, including Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines.
The caucus is expected to include other Conservative MPs and subject-matter experts, with support from the party’s foreign affairs critic.
The announcement comes as political parties continue to position themselves on trade and foreign policy priorities amid shifting global economic conditions.
