FORT McMURRAY — Residents and businesses are being asked to weigh in on proposed changes aimed at aligning downtown development rules with the city’s long-term revitalization plan.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has launched a public engagement process to gather feedback on updates to the land use bylaw, a key step in implementing the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan approved by council in 2023.
The plan sets out a vision for revitalizing downtown Fort McMurray, identifying different areas based on current land use and future development opportunities. It also outlines priorities such as improving safety, accessibility, urban design and overall appearance.
Municipal officials say updates to zoning rules are needed before elements of the plan can move forward, and input from residents, businesses and investors will help shape those changes.
Feedback is being collected through an online survey and in-person sessions scheduled at several locations in early May, including the Jubilee Centre, Peter Pond Mall and MacDonald Island Park.
The engagement period runs until May 15, with recommendations expected to be presented to council in early 2027.
The municipality says the process is intended to ensure future development reflects community priorities and supports long-term growth in the downtown core.
