FORT McMURRAY — An Alberta author is marking the 10th anniversary of the Fort McMurray wildfire with the release of an audiobook version of her memoir about the disaster and its aftermath.
Therese Greenwood said the new audio edition of her book, What You Take With You: Wildfire, Family and the Road Home, offers a different way to experience the story of the 2016 wildfire that forced about 90,000 people from their homes.
The audiobook is published by ECW Press and narrated by Canadian actor Athena Karkanis.
Greenwood said the anniversary is a significant milestone for those who lived through the wildfire, and hearing the story aloud adds a new level of connection.
She said the narration brings urgency and emotion to her account of the evacuation and the items she chose to take with her.
The memoir offers a personal perspective on the wildfire, widely considered the largest in Canadian history, and explores the experiences of residents forced to flee on short notice.
Greenwood said that in the minutes she had to pack, she chose items with personal meaning rather than expensive belongings, describing them as reminders of what matters most.
The book was previously named an Amazon Canada “Hot New Release” and was a finalist for an Alberta Book Publishing Award.
Greenwood has received honours including the Crime Writers of Canada Award of Excellence and the Western Writers of America Spur Award for her fiction.
