FORT McMURRAY — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is rolling out a series of spring collection programs aimed at helping residents dispose of household waste and recycle materials more effectively.
Municipal officials say the seasonal initiatives include yard waste collection, pet waste drop-off events, heavy item pickup and a series of “Big Bin” events across the region.
Free pet waste drop-off events are scheduled at multiple locations in early May, offering residents a cost-saving option following the introduction of new landfill disposal fees for pet waste on April 1. Pet waste must be double-bagged for drop-off, and officials say it should not be placed in recycling bins or public park containers.
Weekly yard waste collection is also set to resume once weather conditions allow. Residents are being asked to use paper yard waste bags, bundle branches within size limits and place materials at the curb on their regular collection day.
The heavy item pickup program will run through mid-May, allowing households to register up to four large items for curbside collection. While most items are collected free of charge, some fees apply for items such as mattresses and appliances.
Big Bin events are scheduled from May 31 to June 28 at locations including MacDonald Island Park, Anzac, Centerfire Place, Vista Ridge and Gregoire Lake Estates, giving residents an opportunity to dispose of larger household items, renovation materials and electronic waste.
Officials say the programs are designed to reduce landfill waste and make disposal more accessible, encouraging residents to take advantage of the services throughout the spring.
