FORT McMURRAY — Wood Buffalo RCMP say a man wanted on several outstanding warrants has been arrested in Chipewyan Prairie First Nation following an operation involving the Crime Reduction Unit and RCMP Air Services.
Police say officers travelled to the community around 12:25 p.m. Thursday in an attempt to arrest a prolific offender wanted on provincial warrants related to assault, failing to comply with probation and fleeing from police.
RCMP say the suspect fled on a quad immediately after seeing officers.
Police say RCMP Air Services maintained visual contact with the man as he travelled to a residence in the community.
Officers arrested the suspect before he was able to enter the home, according to police.
Thirty-eight-year-old Vincent Janvier of Chipewyan Prairie First Nation is charged with failing to comply with a probation order and flight from a peace officer.
Janvier was remanded into custody following a judicial interim release hearing and is scheduled to appear in Fort McMurray court May 11.
Staff Sgt. Sabrina Clayton says RCMP continue targeting prolific offenders as part of ongoing crime reduction efforts in the region.
Clayton says the use of RCMP Air Services helped reduce risks to both officers and the public during the arrest operation.
Police are encouraging residents to continue reporting suspicious or criminal activity, saying public information helps guide patrols and investigations across the region.
