FORT McMURRAY — A 16-year-old Fort McMurray driver is facing charges after RCMP say officers caught the youth performing donuts in a pickup truck near a sports field in the Timberlea area.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say officers responded Tuesday morning to reports of stunt driving near the intersection of Cartier Road and Carteret Drive.
When officers arrived, police say they observed tire marks and smoke from burned tires in the area.
RCMP say officers then located a red 2005 GMC Sierra “mid-donut” in the parking lot of Syncrude Athletic Park and initiated a traffic stop.
Police say the youth driver was initially issued a violation ticket for stunt driving under Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act.
After the traffic stop ended, RCMP say officers learned the same vehicle had allegedly been driven onto a nearby soccer field, causing what police described as significant damage.
The 16-year-old, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has since been charged with mischief.
He is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on July 7.
RCMP are reminding residents to report suspicious or dangerous driving activity to police or Crime Stoppers.
