FORT McMURRAY — A Calgary man is facing multiple firearms and kidnapping charges after RCMP say a man escaped from an armed abduction north of Fort McMurray before police later seized drugs, cash and a stolen handgun during the investigation.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say officers responded to a 911 call around 10 p.m. on May 19 involving a possible abduction along Highway 63 north of the city.
Police say the victim reported being a passenger in a vehicle driven by a man known to him when the driver allegedly began threatening him and pointed a handgun in his direction.
According to RCMP, the victim grabbed the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to lose control and giving him an opportunity to jump from the SUV and flee toward a nearby truck stop.
Police say a bystander helped the victim contact emergency services while the suspect fled the area in a silver 2015 Toyota Venza.
RCMP say the victim was not physically injured.
The following afternoon, Wood Buffalo RCMP officers, assisted by the Crime Reduction Unit, Criminal Intelligence Unit, drug investigators, Police Dog Services and ALERT officers, located the suspect vehicle in an alley behind Walnut Crescent.
Police say the suspect was arrested during a traffic stop without incident.
Investigators later executed search warrants on the vehicle and a residence on Walnut Crescent.
RCMP say officers seized more than half a kilogram of suspected cocaine, 10 grams of suspected psilocybin, a stolen Glock handgun, two loaded magazines and more than $4,200 in cash.
Saad Khan, 39, of Calgary, has been charged with kidnapping with a firearm, forcible confinement, using a firearm during the commission of an offence, pointing a firearm, uttering threats and several weapons-related offences.
He was remanded into custody following a judicial interim release hearing and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on June 1.
“Due to the coordinated efforts of the Wood Buffalo RCMP and Wood Buffalo ALERT, the suspect was located and arrested safely, demonstrating our collective commitment to public safety,” Staff Sgt. Sabrina Clayton said in a statement.
