Apparently scrolling for free is no longer enough.

Meta has officially launched paid subscription plans for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp as the company looks for new ways to make money outside of ads. The new plans include extra features like profile customization, anonymous story viewing, premium stickers, and more tools for creators and heavy users.
Instagram and Facebook subscriptions are expected to cost around $3.99 a month, while WhatsApp Plus will be slightly cheaper. Meta is also testing even more expensive AI-powered subscription plans under a new brand called Meta One.
And honestly, people seem exhausted by it.
The internet reaction has mostly been some version of:
why does literally everything need a subscription now?
Music apps, streaming services, cloud storage, meal kits, TV channels, grocery delivery… now social media too. At this point, people are half-expecting their toaster to eventually ask for a monthly membership fee.
One of the more controversial features is anonymous story viewing, which basically gives professional lurkers an official upgrade package. Because apparently silently watching someone’s vacation photos wasn’t advanced enough already.
Meta says the regular free versions of the apps are staying, so nobody is being forced to pay. But the launch still feels like another sign that tech companies are trying to squeeze extra money out of apps people have used for free for years.
The bigger question now is whether people actually want premium social media features… or if everyone’s just tired of seeing another monthly charge show up on their credit card statement.
