FORT McMURRAY — A taste of Newfoundland is heading to Fort McMurray this week as one of Atlantic Canada’s most recognizable beer brands hosts a celebration aimed at East Coast workers living in northern Alberta.
India Beer, a longtime Newfoundland and Labrador brand not normally sold outside Atlantic Canada, is holding a one-night event Thursday at Brewskis in Fort McMurray.
Organizers say the gathering is designed to reconnect Newfoundlanders working in Alberta with familiar traditions, food and culture often associated with home.
The event will feature India Beer, East Coast-inspired food specials, merchandise giveaways and a contest offering a return flight for two to Newfoundland and Labrador.
Fort McMurray has long been home to a large population of workers from Newfoundland and Labrador, many of whom moved west over the years for employment opportunities in Alberta’s oilsands and industrial sectors.
For many East Coast workers, cultural traditions and social connections remain closely tied to home communities despite living thousands of kilometres away.
India Beer brewery manager Sean Kennedy said the brand remains deeply connected to Newfoundland culture and identity, particularly among people who moved away for work but still maintain strong emotional ties to the province.
Organizers say Fort McMurray was selected for the event because of its large Newfoundland and Labrador population and longstanding connection to East Coast workers.
The gathering is expected to draw Newfoundlanders and other Atlantic Canadians living in the region for an evening centred around familiar food, music, conversation and memories from home.
