FORT McMURRAY — Municipal crews will spend the week cleaning litter and debris along a stretch of Highway 63 through Fort McMurray as part of ongoing spring cleanup efforts.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says Public Works employees and other municipal staff will be working between Saprae Creek Trail, also known as Airport Road, and the Parsons Creek Interchange from June 1 to June 5.
Cleanup activities will take place during daylight hours and will focus on removing garbage and debris from roadside ditches and nearby green spaces.
While maintenance of Highway 63 is generally the responsibility of the provincial government, municipal officials say the cleanup is intended to improve the appearance of one of the community’s busiest transportation corridors and main entry points into Fort McMurray.
Drivers are being asked to use caution while travelling through the work zone.
The municipality says cleanup crews will be operating in high-traffic areas along the highway and motorists should slow down, obey posted signs and leave space for workers.
Officials say the initiative is part of broader efforts to keep public spaces clean following the winter season.
The municipality is also encouraging residents to participate in spring cleanup activities within their own neighbourhoods.
Community groups and residents can register and organize local cleanup events through the municipality’s community cleanup program.
Municipal officials say even small volunteer efforts can help improve parks, roadways and other shared public spaces across the region.
The cleanup work is expected to continue through June 5, weather permitting.
