FORT McMURRAY — Wood Buffalo RCMP have charged a Calgary man in connection with a 2022 shooting that left one person seriously injured.
Police say officers responded to a report of a shooting on Sparrowhawk Drive on June 17, 2022. The victim suffered a serious leg injury and investigators were initially unable to identify a suspect.
The following day, RCMP executed a search warrant at a residence where the shooting occurred.
During the search, police seized approximately 20 grams of cocaine, 286 grams of cannabis, nearly one gram of fentanyl, carfentanil and benzodiazepine, 408 grams of phenacetin, 30 Tylenol 3 tablets, $6,695 in cash, a stolen .22-calibre rifle, two cellphones and drug trafficking paraphernalia.
RCMP say the investigation remained active and in April 2026 identified 30-year-old Humzah Tariq of Calgary as the suspect in the shooting.
Tariq has been charged with aggravated assault, discharging a firearm with intent to cause bodily harm, two counts of possession of a firearm contrary to a firearms prohibition order, possession of an unauthorized firearm, careless storage of a firearm, possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000, possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine and possession for the purpose of trafficking carfentanil.
Police say Tariq appeared before a justice of the peace for a bail hearing and was remanded into custody.
He is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on June 8.
Acting Investigative Services Officer Staff Sgt. Mike Robinson said the charges reflect the continued efforts of investigators to solve serious crimes and enhance community safety.
The charges have not been proven in court.
