FORT McMURRAY — The Wood Buffalo RCMP is encouraging residents to take extra precautions to secure yards, garages and outbuildings as warmer weather brings increased outdoor activity and seasonal property crime concerns.
Police say items such as power tools, trailers, all-terrain vehicles, lawn tractors and vehicle parts can become targets for thieves when they are left unsecured or visible from public areas.

The detachment also recommends installing motion-activated lighting and security cameras around garages, sheds and trailer parking areas to deter theft and assist investigators if incidents occur.
Residents are encouraged to photograph valuable equipment, record serial numbers and maintain an inventory of high-value items to assist with identification and recovery if property is stolen.
Police also recommend removing keys from vehicles, ATVs and lawn equipment, even when they are stored inside garages, and keeping garage doors closed when not actively being used.
The Wood Buffalo RCMP says taking a few preventative steps can help reduce the risk of theft and protect property during the busy spring and summer months.
