FORT McMURRAY — A dozen Fort McMurray basketball players are preparing to represent the region at the 2026 Alberta Summer Games next month in Strathcona County.
The 12 athletes have been selected to the Zone 7 U14 girls basketball team, which will compete at the provincial multi-sport event from July 16 to 19.
Organizers say the roster is made up entirely of athletes from Fort McMurray.
The Alberta Summer Games bring together young athletes from across the province to compete in a variety of sports while representing their regions.
Coaches and organizers say participation in the games provides opportunities for athletes to develop leadership skills, build confidence and gain experience competing at a high level.
The team includes Blaire Alexander, Breanna Stead, Brianna Morrison, Catey Murphy, Dhyana Ray, Esther Monofi, Ivannah Obumah, Julia Keenan, Kenzie Rankin, Maddie Hennessey, Mansi Pokhrel and Shandy Cayle Daniel.
Supporters are encouraging residents and local businesses to follow the team’s progress as the athletes prepare to compete on one of Alberta’s largest youth sporting stages.
The Alberta Summer Games are held every two years and feature athletes from communities across the province competing in a range of individual and team sports.
