EDMONTON — Two Edmonton junior high school students have been charged after allegedly using artificial intelligence to create sexually explicit images of classmates, according to Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams.
ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation unit said two 14-year-old boys were charged June 1 following an investigation involving Edmonton police and the Zebra Child and Youth Advocacy Centre.
Investigators allege the students used photographs taken without consent, as well as images obtained from social media accounts, to create child sexual exploitation material using artificial intelligence software.
The boys face charges of making and possessing child sexual exploitation material, as well as voyeurism.
Police said a teacher first brought the matter to authorities in late March after receiving complaints from students.
Several students were victimized and investigators say the case remains ongoing.
The school is not being identified in order to protect the identities of the victims.
ALERT said Edmonton police’s Child Protection Section, the Zebra Child and Youth Advocacy Centre and the Saffron Centre have assisted with the investigation and victim support.
The case marks the second school-related investigation by ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation unit involving artificial intelligence-generated child sexual exploitation material.
In December 2025, a Calgary high school student was charged after allegedly using artificial intelligence to create sexually explicit images of multiple girls attending Calgary-area schools.
Police are asking anyone with information about the Edmonton case to contact local authorities or Crime Stoppers.
