FORT McMURRAY — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s fire marshal is reminding residents to properly dispose of smoking materials after a garage fire in Timberlea was traced to improperly discarded smoking products.
Fort McMurray firefighters were called to a home on Brosseau Crescent at about 7 p.m. Wednesday after reports of smoke coming from the residence.
Crews arrived within minutes and found heavy smoke coming from an attached garage.
Firefighters launched an interior attack and quickly brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the single-family home.
No injuries were reported.
Investigators later determined the fire was caused by smoking materials that had not been fully extinguished before being discarded in a plastic container.
“It only takes a moment for a serious fire to happen,” Fire Marshal Nick Brenner said in a statement.
Brenner urged residents to fully extinguish smoking materials in sand or soak them in water before disposal.
The fire marshal also used the incident to highlight the importance of working smoke alarms throughout the home.
Officials said there was no functioning smoke alarm on the ground floor of the residence where the fire occurred.
The municipality recommends residents install and maintain working smoke alarms on every level of their homes and test them regularly.
