MELVILLE, Sask. — One person is in custody after two RCMP officers were seriously injured in a shooting while responding to an assault call in Melville, Sask., on Sunday night.
RCMP say officers were called to a residence on 8th Avenue West at about 9:35 p.m. after receiving a report of an assault.
Police say a firearm was discharged as officers arrived at the scene, striking two Melville RCMP officers.
Both officers were taken to hospital by EMS with what RCMP described as serious injuries.
The armed suspect, believed to be an adult male, remained inside the residence following the shooting.
A large police response was deployed, including members of the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services, Crisis Negotiation Team and Serious Crimes Unit. Officers from the Government of Saskatchewan’s Protection and Response Team and Regina Police Service’s SWAT unit also assisted.
RCMP said they continually assessed whether a dangerous person alert was necessary but ultimately determined there was no elevated risk to public safety because the suspect remained contained inside the residence.
At about 2 a.m. Monday, the suspect and another occupant exited the home.
Police arrested the suspect without incident. The second occupant was initially detained but later released after investigators determined they were not involved.
The suspect remains in custody. No charges had been laid as of Monday morning.
RCMP investigators say they do not believe there is any ongoing threat to public safety.
The Saskatchewan RCMP Serious Crimes Unit is leading the investigation.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact RCMP.
