CALGARY — The Better Business Bureau is warning Albertans to stay alert for seasonal scams as fraudsters take advantage of summer events, travel plans and entertainment activities.
BBB Alberta and East Kootenay says it has recently become aware of a vendor scam targeting people looking to participate in fairs, markets and community events.
The organization says scammers are posting fraudulent online advertisements seeking vendors for events that do not exist. Victims are directed to book tables through what appears to be a legitimate ticketing platform, only to discover the event is fake after money and personal information have been provided.
Mary O’Sullivan-Andersen, president and chief executive officer of BBB Alberta and East Kootenay, said consumers and businesses should verify the identity of organizations and individuals before sending money online.
“Always verify the identity of an organization or individual before sending money when purchasing products or services online,” she said.
The BBB says fake vacation rental listings and ticket fraud linked to concerts and summer events are also common during the warmer months.
Scammers often take advantage of increased travel activity and high demand for accommodations and entertainment by creating fraudulent listings or selling tickets for events they do not control.
O’Sullivan-Andersen said consumers should remain cautious even while making plans for summer activities.
“Everyone looks forward to the warmer weather and time with friends and family,” she said. “However, consumers and businesses alike must continue to be vigilant. Scammers don’t take holidays.”
The BBB recommends researching businesses before making purchases, verifying event details through official sources and being cautious of requests for payment that seem unusual or urgent.
