COLD LAKE — Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after an RCMP officer fatally shot a man during a domestic incident in Cold Lake, about 275 kilometres south-southeast of Fort McMurray.
Cold Lake RCMP responded to a domestic call at about 4:48 p.m. Thursday and determined the suspect inside the residence was armed with a firearm.
Police said the home’s two other occupants were able to escape safely.
After attempts to communicate with the suspect were unsuccessful, the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team was called in to assist.
RCMP said an altercation occurred during the response, and at least one officer fired a service weapon, striking the suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers were injured.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has taken over the investigation, as required whenever a police action results in death or serious injury.
The RCMP said it is fully cooperating with the independent investigation.
The force has also launched its own internal review, which will examine officer training, policy, the police response and the duty status of the officer involved.
